The town of Divide has elected an animal as mayor for the last 12 years as part of a fundraising campaign for the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter, KOAA reported.

This year, Clyde, a 7-year-old mammoth donkey, won the title. His slogans for the campaign included: “Elect a burro for a greater tomorrow,” “Vote for Clyde or you can kiss my backside” and “Clyde is all ears for a better Divide!” Clyde’s biography on the shelter’s website lists his favorite activities as eating and napping.

The mayoral race in Divide takes place every two years, and owners host social media campaigns for the animals who participate, KOAA reported.

People who want to vote for mayor pay $2 each to cast a ballot for their preferred animal.

This year, TCRAS raised a record-breaking $41,040, KXRM reported. Of the 19,093 votes cast, 5,635 went to Clyde. Two animals were named vice mayor to serve alongside Clyde: Cinna and Maizey, both dogs.
