Alexandria, Ala. — An 11-month-old baby died Wednesday after falling into a family’s septic tank, investigators said.
Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said the infant was playing with other children outside around 7 p.m. while the boy’s father helped a neighbor work on a car nearby, WIAT reported.
The father realized he had not seen his son for a few moments, went to look for him and found that he had fallen through a plastic cover to the tank that was not properly secured, WBRC reported.
“Whether the child stepped on it or crawled across it, it opened up and the child fell inside the septic tank,” Wade said.
The father immediately pulled the boy from the tank and started life-saving techniques until paramedics arrived. The child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Anytime an 11-month-old dies, there’s going to be an investigation to it, but it appears to be just a very tragic story,” Wade said.
