RSU to Host Screening of ‘Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope’

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Rogers State University will host a screening of a documentary Feb. 2 about the long-term effects of childhood stress and trauma, the university announced.

The film will be screened from 9 a.m. to noon in the Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center Ballroom on RSU’s Claremore campus.

“Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope” is a KPJR Films-produced documentary about a recently discovered biological syndrome called Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, caused by abuse and neglect that occur during childhood.

“Resilience is a documentary film that brings forth research and information on what some leading experts are calling the largest public health crisis of our time,” said Caitlin Hendrex, RSU coordinator of counseling services.

“Since that original ACE study, research has continued to identify higher risk factors to overall health as a result of toxic stress and childhood adversity that has detrimental effects on the health of a population. Yet, most individuals have never been spoken to about the impact experiences in their childhood may still be having on their health and go through life unaware of this correlation,” she said.

Following the screening, RSU’s Master of Science in community counseling program will lead a discussion panel, consisting of Jody Moore, executive director of Safenet Services; Keith Austin, tribal representative for the Cherokee Nation; Dr. Kathy Hoppe, RSU assistant professor and licensed marriage and family therapist; and Kendrick Oakley, pastor with DestinyLife Church of Claremore and Owasso.

This event is free and open to RSU students and staff, as well as all members of the community.
