Coronavirus: Mom who fought COVID-19 reunited with baby girl 6 weeks after giving birth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — It was a tearful celebration of life for a Massachusetts mother who was finally able to hold her baby girl.

According to Boston's WFXT, 34-year-old Isabel Gonzalez of Chelsea had been waiting about six weeks to hold the life she created.

She left Spaulding Hospital on Tuesday morning and was handed her little girl.

The baby was born March 30 at Massachusetts General Hospital via emergency C-section. Gonzalez then quickly distanced from her.

Gonzalez contracted COVID-19 while she was pregnant. Two days after giving birth, she was rushed to the intensive care unit and ended up on a ventilator until April 26, when she was moved to Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge.

Now she’s finally home in Chelsea.

“It was really heartbreaking because me as a mom, I would want to have my child the moment it’s born, so it was really heartbreaking," said her aunt, Marina Gonzalez, who helped take care of baby Victoria while Isabel Gonzalez was in the hospital.

“She was really devastated. She was heartbroken. She was like, ‘Please take care of them. Please help me out.’ I really took it to my heart that I need to help her," Marina Gonzalez said.

Now, Isabel Gonzalez is together with her husband and two other children, eternally grateful for the health care workers who helped them get home.

“I want to thank them. They are the real heroes in this story right now, that they are the ones that are giving us strength right now. Every day I called for an update on her, it was like, ‘Don’t worry; she’s going to come out,’" she said.
