TULSA, Okla. — A week after Governor Stitt’s executive order allowing state employees to fill in as substitute teachers, the governor’s office is reporting more than 200 state employees have stepped in to help substitute teach.
However, FOX23 checked in with district officials in Tulsa, Sapulpa, Jenks, Owasso, and Broken Arrow. They say no state employees have stepped in to help.
Although we aren’t seeing state employees help in our area, yet, in Broken Arrow city employees are.
City Manager Michael Spurgeon says 15 employees have volunteered so far.
Spurgeon says city employees stepping in is temporary and he’s working with department heads to make sure this doesn’t impact city services.
Volunteers are capped out at 10 hours a week.
He’s expecting to have volunteers, including himself, in schools -- if still needed -- within two weeks after going through the processes in place to substitute.
