Tulsa mayor signs contract, gives officers biggest raise since the 1970s

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum signed a contract this week that gave Tulsa Police officers the biggest raise they have seen since the 1970s.

We first told you about the agreement between the mayor and Tulsa’s Fraternal Order of Police last week.

Under the new contract, which goes into effect immediately, all sworn officers minus the police chief, will get a significant raise.

Tulsa police say they had been at below-market wages for years. The raise puts their salaries on the same level as similar sized cities across the nation.

Police Chief Wendell Franklin hopes the boost in pay will entice new officers to come aboard and help keep the ones who are already here.

“This speaks volumes to the community, to our officers that we are fully supported,” Chief Franklin said in an interview with FOX23. “I’m glad to see this new pay scale come into effect and I think that is going to help us in our recruiting effort.”
