The race is (already) on in Oklahoma 5th Congressional District

TULSA — Before she had even taken the oath of office for her first term as Oklahoma’s newest congressional representative, Kendra Horn had already filed to run for re-election so she could begin fundraising.

And for good reason, since the National Republican Congressional Committee also launched its own campaign to reclaim Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District prior to Horn actually taking office.

[KRMG goes in-depth on Horn's surprising victory, and the opening shots of the 2020 campaign]

Even before the NRCC named her district as one of 55 the GOP plans to target in 2020, Republicans began posting attacks on her in social media and in mailings to voters in the district.

But Horn has also angered some Democrats, voting with Republicans several times - mostly on procedural matters - and making it clear that she makes decisions as an American and an Oklahoman before taking party considerations into account.

She recently spoke with KRMG at length about her first three months in office.

When elected, Horn became only the third woman, and the first female Democrat, ever elected to federal office in Oklahoma.

(Correction: The original version of this story wrongly cited the Republican National Committee as the organization targeting 55 House Democrats. It was in fact the National Republican Congressional Committee. Thanks to Bob Salera with NRCC for the correction.)
