The germiest place on an airplane is......

We know germs are everywhere but you may be shocked to find out where the greatest number of the little beasties hang out.

Travelmath sent a microbiologist inside both an airplane and an airport to test different surfaces.

The first takeaway is airports and airplanes are far dirtier than your house. The second “aha” came when the worst offender of all is the one place you’d really want clean.

The tray table is "the dirtiest of all the locations and surfaces tested," the site writes. "Since this could provide bacteria direct transmission to your mouth, a clear takeaway from this is to eliminate any direct contact your food has with the tray table."

The recommendation is to “bring hand sanitizer for any other dirty surface you may touch along your journey.”

The study breaks down bacteria into "colony-forming units forming units per square inch.” The results come from the average of four aircraft.

  • Tray table – 2,155 CFU/sq inch
  • Overhead air vent – 285 CFU/sq inch
  • Lavatory flush button – 265 CFU/sq inch
  • Seatbelt buckle - 230 CFU/sq inch

When it came to airports it’s no great surprise drinking fountains were the worst offenders carrying 1,240 CFU/sq inch.
