Teenage driver survives crash at Tulsa’s Chili Bowl

TULSA, Okla. — We are learning more about the teenaged driver who was injured during a race Wednesday night at the 2023 Chili Bowl.

In the graphic video that FOX23 is choosing not to show, Ashton Torgerson crashed during the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals Race.

The car flipped over. Torgerson’s father Danny said his son was ejected from the car.

“You’re going to think the worst, and I did,” said Danny.

Danny said his son was able to move right after the crash. He went to the hospital where miraculously he said they found no broken bones, but he does have blood on his brain.

As for how Ashton came out of his car, Danny said, “we have the best safety equipment available,” he continued, “we don’t know what happened yet.”

While the teenager from Oregon continues to heal, his family is so thankful for the Chili Bowl staff and the tremendous outpouring of support from the racing community and beyond.

In fact, the winner of the race, Rico Abreu, met Torgerson at the hospital to give him the trophy.

Ashton will be in the hospital until at least Friday.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Ashton as well.
