SpaceX capsule lights up Tulsa night sky on its return to Earth

Lots of people around Tulsa saw what they THOUGHT was a giant meteor streaking across the night sky around 9:00 p.m. last night.

Turns out it was actually a SpaceX Dragon capsule returning to Earth, after spending the last week or so at the International Space Station.

Tonya Blansett at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum shared a few more tidbits of information about the mission.

“The mission that returned last night had four crew members aboard. One of them was Peggy Whitson. She is a retired NASA astronaut, and she’s now the director of human flight at SpaceX, and so she was the commander, and she has more time in space than any other woman,” Blansett said.

We asked her why we don’t see capsules re-entering the atmosphere more often, and she said they took a slightly different route than usual on this splashdown.

She said the crew did numerous different scientific experiments while on board the space station.
