Senate panel approves school gun bill

OKLAHOMA CITY — A proposal on school employees to carry concealed handguns on campus is making its way through the State Legislature.

State law now allows school employees to be armed if they've completed peace officer or armed security guard training.

The current bill would add school personnel with a concealed carry license to have weapons on school property.

The Senate Education Committee voted 11-3 in favor of the bill on Tuesday.

The idea is now being considered by the full Senate.

It already passed in the House.

Moms Demand Action opposes the bill. The group says teachers are trained to educate, not be law enforcement, and that children would not be safer with more armed educators.

A similar bill passed a House committee last year but did not become law.
