SCAM ALERT: Thieves use gift cards to steal from senior citizens

TULSA — The elderly are the target in the latest scam circling around the Tulsa area.

A statement obtained by KRMG says, “We at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office have recently been made aware that someone is posing as a deputy on the phone in efforts to scam people out of their money.”

The caller claims that the senior citizen missed a court date and owes money.

The scammer tells the victim to go buy a gift card at Dollar General and then call back with the gift card number.

Deputies with TCSO say sometimes the caller gets aggressive.

The calls are being made from a phone number with a 918 area code.

The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office never calls to collect money over the phone.

If you think it may be scam, hang up the phone and call TCSO at 918-569-5600.
