A 17-year-old girl drowned Thursday in Dewar, Okla. after falling through an icy pond, according to the Okmulgee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies told KRMG multiple agencies responded to assist, including both Dewar and Henryetta Police and Fire Departments.
The girl’s body was found under the ice.
We’re told authorities found a dog stranded in the water and believe the girl may have been trying to rescue it.
This is the second such drowning in northeast Oklahoma in the last week.
Authorities urge citizens to avoid walking on frozen bodies of water due to the extreme danger.
