Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt delivers State of the State address

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt delivered his annual State of the State address Monday to kick off the new legislative session.

The governor began his speech by touching on the impact the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt Decision has had on local law enforcement.

“McGirt jeopardizes justice.” Gov. Stitt said.

Governor Stitt proposed paying some Oklahoma teachers six-figure salaries to keep them in the classroom rather than becoming administrators.

“It’s the right thing to do for our teachers and for our kids.” Stitt said.

Stitt said Oklahoma is one of 13 states that charges a grocery tax and proposed eliminating it. The governor proposed other tax reform measures, including the elimination of taxes on military retirement benefits.

“We need more taxpayers, not more taxes.” The governor added.

The governor also pitched a $13 billion dollar investment over the next 10 years in transportation. Part of that investment, the governor said, would be widening the Turner Turnpike between Oklahoma City and Tulsa to six lanes.
