Oklahoma death row inmate Gilbert Postelle asking for clemency

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Another death row inmate is asking for clemency.

Gilbert Postelle was sentenced to death for killing four people in 2005 in Oklahoma County. His attorneys said they are asking the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to change Postelle’s sentence to life without parole.

Postelle’s clemency hearing is scheduled for next week.

In the past couple of months, board members have recommended clemency for two Oklahoma death row inmates – Julius Jones and Bigler Stouffer – and denied clemency for John Grant.

The state executed Grant in late October, the state’s first execution since 2015. Gov. Kevin Stitt commuted Jones’ sentence to life without the possibility of parole just hours before the high-profile death row inmate was scheduled to be put to death.

Stitt now has to decide Stouffer’s fate. Pardon and Parole Board members said they recommended clemency for Stouffer not because they think he’s innocent; instead, they are concerned about the drugs used in the executions.

On Tuesday, a federal judge denied a stay of execution for Stouffer. His attorneys have filed an appeal to the 10th Circuit.

Stouffer has been on death row for decades after he was convicted of killing a schoolteacher named Linda Reaves in the 1980s. His execution is scheduled for Dec. 9.
