How to avoid ATM skimmers

A skimming device, a tool criminals use to steal your bank information and your money, was found on the ATM at the Owasso TCCU Credit Union.

KRMG listeners asked how to spot a skimmer on an ATM or gas pump.

Consumer Warrior Clark Howard has covered skimmers on his radio show, heard weeknights 8pm-10pm on 102.3 KRMG, and on his website Clark.com.

To check for a skimmer, Clark says start by grabbing the plastic slot on an ATM where you insert your card and shake it to make sure it doesn’t come loose. You should also look to see if the card reader appears to have been tampered with before you use your debit card.

If you’re suspicious, you should check with the bank or credit union where the ATM is located. However, Clark says most skimmers are found at independent ATM’s, like those at gas stations or places other than a bank.

After you’ve checked for signs of tampering, Clark says to look for hidden cameras.

When using an ATM, Clark says you should cover your hand to hid your PIN.

For further protection, Clark recommends using a credit card rather than a debit card.
