Homeless numbers change in Oklahoma

TULSA — The number of homeless people decreased in 2018, according to the latest national estimate by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The report shows that 3,871 people experienced homelessness on a single night in 2018 statewide.

The number is a decrease of 7.8 percent since last year.

HUD’s national estimate is based upon data reported by approximately 3,000 cities and counties across the nation.

“Much progress is being made and much work remains to be done,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

“I have great hope that communities all across our nation are intent on preventing and ending homelessness.”

Homelessness among veterans declined 10.3 percent.

The biggest decrease was among homelessness experienced by families.

Homelessness for people with children declined 31.9 percent statewide since 2017.
