’Church Studio’ renovation planned

Tulsa, Okla. — Construction crews broke ground Tuesday on a project to renovate Tulsa's famous Church Studio.

The building at Third and Trenton was originally built in 1913 as Grace Methodist Episcopal Church.

In 1972, the legendary Leon Russell converted the building into a recording studio and a home for his label, Shelter Records.

Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Eric Clapton recorded there.

Some of Tom Petty's first recordings were made in that studio.

Crews are working to renovate the studio and add a museum to honor Leon Russell and the influence he has had on music.

There are already plans to have world-renowned artists record there again.
