Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt says today's ruling from the Supreme Court on the Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA, does not affect Oklahoma. Pruitt says, "The Court’s decisions confirmed that it is up to the states to decide how to define marriage, not the federal government,” Attorney General Scott Pruitt said. “As a result, Oklahoma’s constitutional provision that defines marriage in Oklahoma as between a man and a woman remains valid.”
In the 5-to-4 ruling, the Supreme Court struck down a provision of DOMA, a federal law, that denied federal benefits to homosexual married couples.
That provision had kept legally-married same-sex couples from receiving tax, health and pension benefits that go to heterosexual married couples.
