Kristin Chenoweth opens up about Girl Scout murders cold case

Broken Arrow native Kristin Chenoweth came back to Oklahoma to cast light on the mystery behind the Girl Scout murders of 1977.

The Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress told FOX23 she acted as a guide in a docuseries that dives into the cold case that’s been a mystery in Oklahoma for decades.

Chenoweth said Hulu and ABC asked her to be a part of their new docuseries on the infamous cold case, titled “Keeper of the Ashes”.

“It’s a little close to home. It’s something I don’t discuss much,” said Chenoweth. “People don’t remember it. I was so young, but ‘if not you, then who.’”

It was 1977 at Camp Scott in Mayes County that police said 8-year-old Lori Farmer, 9-year-old Michelle Guse and 10-year-old Denise Milner were raped and murdered while campers were asleep. Police arrested Gene Hart in the case, but a jury found him not guilty of the murders.

Chenoweth said she was supposed to be at that camp.

“My mom wanted me to make friends. She asked me about going to this camp, and did I want to go. Yes, I wanted to go,” said Chenoweth. “I got sick, and I couldn’t go.”

Now Chenoweth is helping to tell the victims’ story. “Keeper of the Ashes” is out on Hulu, and Chenoweth hopes to shine a light on more than just the tragic ending of the girls’ lives.

“My end goal is, let’s remember what could have been, and to give those families a voice, and what they’ve went through since,” Chenoweth said. “I want people to know how Lori, Michelle and Deedee lived. That’s my end goal.”
