FC Tulsa prepares for Black Gold Derby against OKC Energy Saturday, golden wrench trophy at stake

TULSA, Okla. — FC Tulsa faces the Oklahoma City Energy Saturday at ONEOK Field for the Black Gold Derby. Tulsa is hoping to hold on to the highly coveted golden wrench trophy.

Center Midfielder Eric Bird and Goalkeeper Sean Lewis are amped up for this weekend special match. This match is its 7th year and is a major rivalry game between the two Oklahoma teams.

Bird told FOX23, “I think there’s still a rivalry there between the two cities, anyone from Oklahoma would tell you that, and so it just hits home, it’s more important and the fans are obviously going to be able to travel and come here from Oklahoma City, and that makes the rivalry even more heated, so everything is adding up to this one game.”

The 40-pound golden wrench comes from Oklahoma’s long history in the oil industry, also known as ‘black gold.’

This will be the fourth time the two teams play each other this season, and Tulsa’s last regular season match before the playoffs.

The team is expecting a larger crowd of around 5,000 fans for the game, which further amps up excitement for the big night.

The game starts at 7p.m. on Saturday October 30. It’s a blackout game, so fans are encouraged to wear all black.
