Congressman Kevin Hern criticizes Biden Administration ahead of border visit

Ahead of his trip to Del Rio, Texas at the southern border, Oklahoma Congressman Kevin Hern joined the KRMG Morning News.

Congressman Hern has a history of concern about the immigration situation at the southern border, penning this letter to the Tulsa World back in 2019. Even back then, he was calling it a “crisis.” Hern said he wants to see first-hand how things are being handled with a new President in charge.

“We saw 100,000+ people [apprehended crossing the southern border illegally] in February, 170,000 in March, with no end in sight,” Congressman Hern said. “We’re seeing the news folk talk to these kids that are coming and they say they don’t even know where they’re going. They’re just abandoned. So we hope to go down there and see this.”

Congressman Hern plans to talk to border patrol agents to discuss their needs in handling the issue.

“They need help,” Hern told KRMG. “They’re being pulled off the northern border, they’re being pulled off other parts of the [southern] border... we just don’t have the manpower.”

Hern blames the Biden Administration’s immigration policies, and the reversal of several Trump Administration policies, for the influx of migrants at the border. He said the lack of action from the President has and will continue to make the problem worse.

“President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are doing a lot of lip service but they’re doing absolutely nothing,” Hern said. “[President Biden] put her in charge, but she spent her first 14 days with no news conference talking about what she’s doing. She’s out pushing an infrastructure bill, while we’re seeing record numbers of people coming across the border.”

On the topic of President Biden’s more than $2 trillion infrastructure package, Congressman Hern again had sharp words for the Biden Administration.

“He’s being pulled so far left,” Hern said about President Biden. “He’s farther left than President Obama. We didn’t think anybody could be as left as that.”

Hern told KRMG Biden’s proposed plan is a “farce.”

“Most of this bill, about $1.6 trillion, is to go create new things. But you couldn’t build anything right now, with all the regulations that are in place.” Hern said. “It takes years. Look at our Gilcrease highway around the western part of Tulsa. That’s been in the works for 50 years. So this idea that we can go pass $2.25 trillion now, another $2 trillion later this year, and raise taxes for it, and somehow all of a sudden the economy is going to bustle because we have millions of jobs is just not truthful.”
