Abundant rainfall causes flooding, drought improvement

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa has received nearly double the amount of rainfall than average this month, with almost 9″ so far this May.

This May is now in the Top 20 wettest Mays on record for Tulsa, and we still have another week to go with more rain chances.

May is typically Tulsa’s wettest month of the year.

Some locations west of Tulsa have received around half a foot of rainfall over the past 2 days. Another ½” to 1″ is likely to fall through Thursday.

Several rivers and creeks are expected to rise out of their banks:

• The Caney River in Ramona, Okla. and Collinsville, Okla. may climb to moderate flood stage late Wednesday night.
• Bird Creek from Sperry, Okla. to Owasso may also enter a minor flood stage as it crests Wednesday.
• The Neosho River in Ottawa County is also expected to reach minor flood stage later this week.

Much of the heavy rainfall has occurred in areas northwest of Tulsa where drought remains. Official improvement and even removal of that drought is likely in the coming two weeks.
