Our government is divided into three branches. Congress makes the laws. The courts interpret the laws. And the executive branch enforces the laws.
That three-way division of power applies to the states too. Legislatures write ‘em and pass ‘em. State courts interpret and rule on ‘em…and the executive branch…the Governor and the police, through the attorney general, enforce them.
I mention all of this while thinking of Wagoner County sheriff Bob Colbert. As you heard first on KRMG yesterday, Sheriff Colbert is making it clear that he won’t enforce any new gun laws that he doesn’t like, new gun laws that he thinks might violate the rights of the people he is sworn to protect.
It’s not that Sheriff Colbert is against all of the President’s proposals. He likes the proposal to strengthen background checks saying…quote…”I think gun shows are terrible. You walk into any gun show and you can watch illegal aliens walking around with bags full of pistols. I have a problem with that.”
So, Sheriff Colbert, will apparently pick and choose which of the new laws…if any…he will enforce.
Sorry Sheriff.
As much as we can agree with you about the effectiveness or even the constitutionality of the proposed new gun control laws, you DON’T get to choose which laws you want to enforce and which you don’t. It’s not your job. Your job…as prescribed by the constitution by the way…is to enforce the laws that are passed….whether you agree with them at not.
It’s up to the courts to decide if the president or congress have over-stepped their authority. Not yours.
For you to take on the role of the courts, Sheriff, that clearly WOULD be unconstitutional.
