TULSA WORLD - OKLAHOMA CITY - Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett told municipal leaders Wednesday that Tulsa has taken an aggressive position with the Oklahoma Tax Commission over its failure to fully collect and remit sales taxes to the city. "We believe it hasn't been done to our satisfaction," Bartlett told members of the Oklahoma Municipal League at the group's annual conference at the Cox Convention Center. Bartlett and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett serve on the group's revenue task force. Tulsa sued the Tax Commission following the passage of a law last session that the city believes removes its right to contract with private firms for sales tax collections, Bartlett said.
NEWSOK.com - The IRS should investigate an Edmond church whose pastor endorsed a gubernatorial nominee from the pulpit, the leader of a religious liberty watchdog group said Wednesday. The Rev. Paul Blair of Fairview Baptist Church said during his sermon Sunday that he planned to vote for Mary Fallin, the Republican nominee for governor. The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said federal law prohibits tax-exempt churches and other places of worship from endorsing or opposing candidates for public office. Lynn has written to the Internal Revenue Service to ask it to investigate whether Blair deliberately violated federal law. "When churches become cogs in any candidate's political machine, they ought to lose their tax exemption," he said. "I urge the IRS to investigate this matter and apply the law." Lynn filed a similar complaint with the IRS against Blair in 2008 after Blair reportedly said during a sermon that he would vote for GOP presidential nominee John McCain.
A Pawnee County judge has suspended the county sheriff and a county commissioner from office. Sheriff Roger Price and Commissioner Dale Vance were suspended Wednesday by District Judge Jefferson Sellers. A grand jury recommended the suspensions after a nearly three-week investigation. Special prosecutor Hollis Thorp says Price allegedly let a person out of jail without posting of a bond or a judge's consent and of not arresting a wanted person. Thorp says Vance is accused of taking money from the sale of county scrap metal instead of depositing it with the county treasurer's office.

New research suggests that obesity may be caused by a contagious virus related to the common cold virus, the (UK) Independent reported Sept. 21. Scientists at UC San Diego say the discovery of this strain of adenovirus, which has been labeled the "fat bug," is new evidence for an illness they have called "infectobesity"--obesity that is transmitted from person to person, like an infection. There are more than 50 strains of adenovirus known to infect humans but only one, adenovirus 36, has been linked to human obesity. Laboratory studies showed the virus infects immature fat cells, prompting them to proliferate and grow more quickly.
Republican candidate for California governor, Meg Whitman, said Wednesday that she unknowingly employed an illegal immigrant for nine years. The candidate's former housekeeper Nicky Diaz was joined by attorney Gloria Allred, a longtime Democratic supporter, at a news conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Allred claims that Diaz was not paid for all of the hours she worked, and said she would be filing a claim against Whitman. Allred said that during Diaz's years of employment, Whitman caused her "to feel exploited, disrespected, humiliated and emotionally and financially abused."
TMZ - Meg Whitman's campaign just gave us documents suggesting that her former maid, Nicky Diaz Santillan, actually lied to Meg about her immigration status when she was hired back in 2000. The documents, which Whitman claims Nicky filled out and signed back in 2000 during her application for employment, appear to show that the maid stated under the penalty of perjury that she was a "lawful permanent resident" of the United States. Whitman also claims Nicky provided her with a social security card and valid California Driver's License with her employment application ... which Meg kept and has now handed over to TMZ. Whitman has also issued a statement on the matter, saying ... "After 9 years of faithful service, Nicky came to us in June 2009 and confessed that she was an illegal worker." Whitman continues, "Nicky has falsified the hiring documents and personal information she provided to the employment agency that brought her to us in 2000." And, Whitman continues, "I believe Nicky is being manipulated by Gloria Allred for political and financial purposes during the last few weeks of a hotly contested election."
McDonald's Corp. has warned federal regulators that it could drop its health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 hourly restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the U.S. health overhaul. The move is one of the clearest indications that new rules may disrupt workers' health plans as the law ripples through the real world. Trade groups representing restaurants and retailers say low-wage employers might halt their coverage if the government doesn't loosen a requirement for "mini-med" plans, which offer limited benefits to some 1.4 million Americans.
The government is warning parents and caregivers to stop using infant sleep positioners- those soft fabric products that anxious parents put in the crib to keep babies safely sleeping on their backs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday they know of 12 infants in the last 13 years who died when they suffocated in a positioner or became trapped and suffocated between the positioner and the side of a crib. The infants were between the ages of one month and four months. Most of the babies suffocated after rolling from a side to stomach position. CPSC has also received dozens of reports of infants who were placed on their backs or sides in sleep positioners and later found in potentially dangerous position in or next to the sleep positioners.

After Bolton's Tuesday night elimination, the singer demanded an apology.
At a question-and-answer forum with Virginia residents today, Obama called Comedy Central host Jon Stewart's upcoming "Rally to Restore Sanity" event "really important." Stewart's march is, in part, a satirical response to Fox News host Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" march on Washington D.C., where tens of thousands of the president's critics turned out on Aug. 28. Obama left little doubt as to which of the two men's shows he preferred. "What happens is these cable shows and talk show hosts, a lot of them figure out that, 'The more controversial I can be, and I'm calling Obama this name or that name and saying he wasn't born in this country, that will get me attention,' " Obama said, adding that Stewart's event would, by contrast, would appeal to Americans who "don't go around calling people names," MSNBC.com reported.]
A viral infection is the likely cause of the stomach distress that sent former President Jimmy Carter to a Cleveland hospital after a flight from Atlanta, medical staff said Wednesday. Carter, who was spending a second night in the hospital, was recovering and the viral infection was clearing up, said a statement from MetroHealth Medical Center. "President Carter thanks all those who have expressed concern and sent greetings to him," the statement says. The 85-year-old ex-president became ill Tuesday during the Delta Air Lines flight, causing rescue crews to rush him to the hospital after the plane landed. He was whisked from an airplane to the facility's emergency room, and was placed under round-the-clock monitoring by a team of doctors.

CARMEL, Ind. -- The mother and father of a dying 9-year-old boy stricken with muscular dystrophy are battling Carmel Clay Schools, hoping to make the last months of the boy's life as normal as possible. Greg and Susie Cowen said the school system is making a difficult situation worse by not allowing Jake Cowen's mother to accompany him to class, 6News' Joanna Massee reported. Jake's doctor expects the boy to live nine months. Aside from MD, the fourth-grader is also afflicted with autism. Jake needs either a nurse or his mother to help him, but Susie isn't permitted inside Mohawk Trails Elementary School. "They've said that I'm not allowed to go in and tend to his medical needs," Susie Cowen said. "We want Jacob to go to school because he loves attending school." Principal Linda Wilson declined an on-camera interview, but told Massee that the school accommodates the needs of children with medical issues. Jake's parents said they don't trust school employees after an incident in which they claimed a teacher nearly pulled feeding tubes the boy requires out because she thought it was a backpack instead of a feeding apparatus.
