KRMG Morning News "Stack of Stuff" and Notes 3/25/2010

•    Mayor Dewey Bartlett, FOP have dueling news conferences yesterday. FOP continues their claim that DB seeks to create city/county police force. DB continues to deny.
•    STUDY: City should privatize the Tulsa Zoo, but not with Tulsa Zoo Friends at the helm.
•    Six-year-old Jeremiah Mitchell, the Oologah student who remains hospitalized from bacterial meningitis, was scheduled for surgery Wednesday to have all four limbs amputated, according to his grandmother Carolyn Mitchell. Mitchell said her grandson was out of the coma but on heavy pain medication as of Thursday morning.
•    OBAMACARE: A bipartisan coalition of Oklahoma state lawmakers voted overwhelmingly today to allow Oklahoma voters the chance to opt-out of the new federal health care system.
•    Senate Republicans find 2 flaws in House-passed health care reconciliation package. Senate parliamentarian informed Democratic leaders that both are in violation of the Byrd Rule. One related to Pell Grants, the other makes small technical corrections. Republicans will succeed in at least slightly altering the legislation, which means that the House is once again required to vote on it. With no substantial changes, Pelosi should have little problem assembling the same 220 Democrats who passed the measure Sunday night.
•    Octomom Nadya Suleman, who is fighting to keep her house from foreclosure, has agreed to allow PETA to put a sign in her front yard proclaiming, "Don't Let Your Dog or Cat Become an Octomom. Always Spay or Neuter." PETA offered Suleman $5,000 and a month's supply of veggie burgers, hot dogs in exchange for the sign in front of her house.
•    Video: George Bush Wipes Hand On Bill Clinton's Shirt After Shaking Hands With Haitians
•    SWISS CHEESE BRIDGE: ODOT shut down the left lane of eastbound I-44 at 161st E. Ave. last night to allow road crews to make repairs. Workers are patched an area about 4 feet long, 8 inches wide and 2 inches deep. ODOT says this is the beginnings of a pothole. An actual hole has not developed in the bridge deck.  However, the area must be repaired immediately to stop another hole from forming. Crews anticipate the lane will be open again by rush hour Thursday morning.
•    Obama Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood: 'This Is the End of Favoring Motorized Transportation at the Expense of Non-Motorized.' Federal transportation policies will no longer favor "motorized" transportation, such as cars and trucks, over "non-motorized" transportation, such as walking and bicycling.
•    CALIFORNIA TO LEGALIZE POT?  A CA voter initiative that would legalize possession and sale of marijuana has qualified for the November ballot in what supporters called a "watershed moment" for their cause.
•    USPS took the first formal step Wednesday toward cutting mail delivery to five days a week. Under the proposal, mail delivery to homes and businesses and mail collection from blue mailboxes would be limited to Monday through Friday. Beyond getting the regulatory commission's opinion, the Postal Service needs Congress to approve the change.
