KRMG Morning News "Stack of Stuff" and Notes 3/24/2010

By Joe Kelley, Host of the KRMG Morning News

•    ObamaCare: 22 pens, one f-bomb and one signature later--the president made health care into law. Certain changes to insurance and new tax breaks began immediately. The president will also begin his trips to boost public opinion of the bill and local Congressional leaders. Also on the move are Attorney's Generals from 14 states who will file suits to overturn the bill on constitutional grounds.
•    According to a Gallup/USA Today poll conducted the day after health care legislation passed the House of Representatives, 49 percent of the respondents think the passage of reform is a "good thing," compared to the 40 percent who think it is bad.
•    One aspect of the health care bill that is taking effect immediately is that chain restaurants will be required to prominently display nutrition information.
•    Budget Crisis: City of Tulsa can only afford one more mowing cycle between now and end of budget year on June 30th.
•    The city council plans to investigate claim made by 3 Tulsa deputy police chiefs who say the mayor's office knew all along officers did not have to be laid off, before being rehired. The city council plans an executive session Thursday to discuss the investigation in private.
•    Mayor Dewey Bartlett signed an executive order to abolish 279 citywide jobs. That move was made to save the city $7.5 million. However, 89 laid-off police officers learn their jobs are on that elimination list.
•    FOP: Mayor Bartlett is moving toward a county-controlled law enforcement system. Spokesperson Kim Presley says FOP is "shocked" that Bartlett got rid of 89 police positions.
•    The news of abolishing nearly 89 police positions was a surprise to even Tulsa's top cop.  Police Chief Chuck Jordan's preliminary budget for next year accounts for almost a 7-percent reduction in funds, but still brings back all 89 officers. The ultimate decision on this issue rests with the city council, of course. They must approve the mayor's budget for next year. That process will begin in late May.
•    A UK city council has backed the removal of 6,000 trees at a beauty spot, saying that the clearance will deterrent to people meeting for sex in the woods.
•    RECALL: More than 1 million baby slings made by Infantino are being recalled because the products have been linked to three infant deaths. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says babies can suffocate in the soft fabric slings. The agency is urging parents to immediately stop using the slings for babies under 4 months.
•    Extreme Makeover: Home Edition that was taped in Tulsa in January has been moved to May 9th for broadcast.
•    A new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim--and 24 percent say "he may be the Antichrist."
•    A beloved Rio Grande Zoo giraffe was dismembered and placed in a trash bin following its death, and an outraged mayor of Albuquerque has ordered an investigation into it. The giraffe, Kashka, had suffered a debilitating leg injury after a recent fall. Zoo officials said attempts to treat her condition would not likely be successful, so veterinarians decided last week to euthanize the 16-year-old giraffe that stood 15 feet tall and weighed about 2,000 pounds. A necropsy of the animal showed that in addition to ligament damage in her left rear knee, Kashka was in the initial stages of peracute mortality syndrome, a wasting disease that is common and usually fatal in giraffes but not well understood.
