KRMG Morning News "Stack of Stuff" and Notes 7/19/2010

By Joe Kelley, Host of the KRMG Morning News

  • Sarah Palin has a new cause - the proposed mosque near Ground Zero in New York. On Sunday, via the social networking site Twitter, the former Alaska governor asked "peace-seeking" Muslims to understand that the mosque will interfere with recovery from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing"
  • FOX23: The Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrests Sam Sommers following a bizarre crash Saturday morning along I-244 near 2nd  Street. OHP says Sommers passenger, Linda Woods, was vomiting out of the window of Sommers' pickup. The passenger door then came open and Woods fell onto the highway. The report says a second passenger, Bradley White tried to save her but ended up falling out as well. The truck then hit a barrier wall. OHP says Sommers appeared to have been driving under the influence. He is being held in the Tulsa County Jail on a complaint of DUI. His bond is set at $1,000.
  • KTUL: Another metro road project will kick off Monday, this time along Highway 75. A project to replace four bridge decks just south of the US-75/I-44 junction is set to begin Monday, July 19. Crews will be replacing the north and southbound US-75 bridge decks over Mooser Creek, and also the decks on the eastbound I-44 off-ramp to southbound US-75, and the northbound US-75 off-ramp to eastbound I-44. This $2.3 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road and Bridge, and is expected to take seven months to complete.
  • KOTV: CRAIG COUNTY -- The Will Rogers Turnpike at mile marker 285, near Vinita, was closed Sunday due to an accident involving two semi trucks. The area was closed at about 3:30 p.m. and was reopened after 9 p.m. The accident involved hydrochloric acid, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. No one was injured in the crash.
  • Sunday July 18th, EMSA Paramedics have responded to five heat related emergencies.  One was a 22-year-old female who called 911 for her symptoms but refused transport to a hospital.  Two others were transported to local hospitals in fair condition.  The latest two were not so fortunate.  They are an elderly couple who had turned off the air-conditioning in an effort to try to keep the electric bill down.  The wife was treated on scene and transported emergency status to SFH and the husband was treated and transported to the same hospital a short time later.  The female is in serious condition where the male is listed in fair condition.
  • The Treasury Department failed to consider the economic fallout when it told General Motors and Chrysler to quickly shutter many dealerships as part of government-led bankruptcies, a federal watchdog found. A report released Sunday by the special inspector general for the government's bailout program raised questions about whether the Obama administration's auto task force considered the job losses from the closings while pressuring the companies to reduce costs.
  • BOSTON GLOBE: The relentlessly rising cost of health insurance is prompting some small Massachusetts companies to drop coverage for their workers and encourage them to sign up for state-subsidized care instead, a trend that, some analysts say, could eventually weigh heavily on the state's already-stressed budget. Since April 1, the date many insurance contracts are renewed for small businesses, the owners of about 90 small companies terminated their insurance plans with Braintree-based broker Jeff Rich and indicated in a follow-up survey that they were relying on publicly-funded insurance for their employees.
  • Mark Williams, the tea party leader who wrote a blog post this week calling the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) racist, has been "expelled" from the National Tea Party Federation. Williams wrote the blog post on Thursday in response to the NAACP's Tuesday declaration accusing the tea party movement of tolerating racist elements in its midst (see The Upshot's rundown on the week of attacks and counterattacks here). It was written as an imaginary letter to President Abraham Lincoln and accused the NAACP of being racist for using the word "colored" in its name. When some reacted to it in outrage, Williams deleted it from his website, declaring it time to "move forward." The National Tea Party Federation apparently decided to move forward without Williams. Spokesman David Webb said on Face the Nation this morning that Williams and his Tea Party Express had been pushed out because Williams' posting was "clearly offensive."
  • American party girl Paris Hilton was briefly held by police on the French island of Corsica after being caught with cannabis in her handbag. Hilton was detained after arriving at the airport in Figari on a private jet from Paris. Police found less than a gram of cannabis in her handbag and quickly released her without charge.
  • SEEPAGE: The US government has ordered BP to report on a "detected seep" near the Gulf of Mexico oil well as experts monitored the seabed for cracks after the months-long gusher was capped.
  • Illinois - Illinois is eliminating the state writing exam for elementary and junior high students, provoking concerns that writing instruction will taper off and fewer students will master the critical skill. Education officials blamed the state's budget crisis, saying canceling the writing test this year will save $3.5 million. State data showed that students have not always fared well on the writing exams with only 54 percent of fifth graders passing the writing test in 2009.
  • New York - Mel Gibson is poised to quit the US after selling his mansion near New York. The disgraced Lethal Weapon star, who faces allegations of violence from his Russian former girlfriend, sold the mock Tudor property, known as Old Mill Farm. Gibson has also put his Malibu home, Lavender Hill Farm, on the market. He has told friends that he will move back to Australia.
  • Massachusetts - Parents are angry and dismayed over a public school policy that sees students getting sent home with fat letters. Many schools across the state began sending Body Mass Index (BMI) reports and letters home with students in order to flag possible obesity issues to parents.
  • Robert Shapiro told the AP that he agreed to represent Lohan on the condition that she serves her jail time and fully complies with the terms of her probation. Lohan is scheduled to begin serving a 90-day sentence on Tuesday. Shapiro also said he would help Lohan find treatment that would aid in long-term recovery and sobriety.
  • People who are interacting with Lindsay tell TMZ she has been in obsessive denial over her surrender Tuesday, when she must begin serving a 90-day jail sentence -- which will be whittled down to 22 days behind bars. Lindsay is convinced there is still a way she can avoid jail, even though Shapiro made it clear he would only rep her if she went to the pokey.
  • BAR HARBOR - Arriving in a small jet before the Obamas was the first dog, Bo, a Portuguese water dog given as a present by the late U.S. Sen Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. Air traffic at the small Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton was shut down for the presidential arrival. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter patrolled the air in anticipation of the first family's touchdown, and a pair of local fire and rescue trucks stood ready on an otherwise empty tarmac at the private air hangar.
  • Washington DC - President Barack Obama has played a remarkable 41 rounds of golf since becoming president, easily outpacing his predecessor and possibly damaging his ability to portray himself in 2012 as a populist advocate of average folks. With the excursions lasting on average at least five hours, the president has devoted a total of more than 200 hours to golf, not counting time spent on the White House putting green. Thats the equivalent of twenty five eight-hour work days, or five work weeks spent smacking golf balls.
  • The Obamas headed home to Washington, DC on Sunday morning after their quick weekend trip to Bar Harbor, Maine. They left their hotel around 10 a.m., according to pool reports, and arrived at Bar Harbor Airport about 20 minutes later.
  • MIDDLETOWN, Pennsylvania - Police in central Pennsylvania say a middle school teacher lied for years about having an inoperable brain tumor. Fifty-one-year-old Leslie Herneisey of Middletown is accused of faking documents to take sick leave. She faces 12 counts of forgery. Her attorney, Terry McGowan, says Herneisey is battling depression.
  • Mel Gibson isn't the only one making news by spewing the F-word. Tiger Woods dropped the bomb several times Saturday. Tiger competed in the prestigious British Open golf tournament, and finished far off the lead. But his poor performance wasn't the surprise, it was the way he totally lost his cool on the 13th hole Saturday. Despite public vows to change his course behavior, Tiger let it rip with a series of F-bombs after blowing a short putt.
