- KOTV: At Thursday night's city council meeting, councilors unanimously approved a crackdown on deadbeat property owners. The city is stepping up penalties for owners of abandoned buildings, people who let their lawns grow wild and folks who won't clean up graffiti. The maximum penalty is a fine of $1,000 a day and six months in jail. One councilor - Chris Trail - acknowledged a double standard, noting the city can't afford to keep up with mowing or graffiti cleanup.
- KOTV: Tulsa Police say one of two men shot during a violent home invasion early Thursday morning has died. They identified him as 18-year-old Darreon Carter. Carter was shot in the head and leg. The second suspect, 23-year-old Daniel Holman, remains in critical condition in a Tulsa hospital. He was shot in the head and stomach. The men were shot by the resident in the apartment in what police say was a case of self-defense.
- KOTV: The council discussed seven options as outlined by council attorney Drew Rees including: involving a special prosecutor to pursue a criminal case, issuing a vote of no confidence, issuing a public censure, make recommendations to the mayor regarding his chief of staff, Terry Simonson, restrict Simonson's appearances in city council committee meetings, filing a complaint with the bar association against Simonson who is an attorney, and referring the matter to the ethics committee or the city auditor. The council decided to table the matter for two weeks to give their attorney time to research their options.
- KJRH: A petition drive is underway calling for Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett's job. The group says it has a few hundred signatures from people wanting a recall; it needs 4-thousand to start the process. Thursday night, Mayor Bartlett didn't appear bothered by the efforts.
- KTUL: Plans are taking shape to roll out a new 539 area code for use in the current 918 area. The changes begin on August 7th when can either dial your seven digit number, or 918 plus the number. Then, next March, you must dial all ten digits. On April 1st, 2011, the new 5-3-9 area code will be available to customers. You may still ask for a 918 number, if they're still available.
- Pink was hospitalized on Thursday after she was injured in a high-flying routine during a concert in Germany. The singer was performing in Nuremberg when a harness which pulls her into the air for her stage stunts malfunctioned and dragged the pop star into a metal barrier. Pink was forced to cut short the concert and was taken in an ambulance to a nearby hospital.
- Today at noon Tulsa time, the top brass at Apple -- including, I would hope, Steve Jobs himself -- will step up to the microphone in the hopes of putting the "death grip" saga to rest. Like many corporate giants before it, Apple is now finding itself on the hot seat for stonewalling when it comes to a pretty obvious defect in its highest-profile product.
- Oil is no longer spewing into the Gulf of Mexico -- at least temporarily -- as BP said it choked off the flow from its undersea well that ruptured in April and caused the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
- The American Cancer Society and three federal agencies named 19 chemicals and shift work on Thursday as potential causes of cancer that deserve more investigation.
- A wealthy Manhattan investment banker and former top Democratic fundraiser was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in prison for defrauding banks of $292 million, some of which he donated to politicians including Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Al Gore.
- The Congress on Thursday approved the broadest overhaul of financial rules since the Great Depression and sent it to President Barack Obama to sign into law.
- Dallas - A man died while executing a twisted plot to win custody of his child. According to Dallas Police investigators, 20-year-old Dwayne Lamont Moten hired a friend to shoot him, intending to blame the crime on his wife's boyfriend and gain custody of his three-year-old son, Dwayne Jr. Sr. Cpl. Janse said the plan was that Jacob Wheeler, also 20, would shoot Mr Moten but only injure him. However, the bullets that struck Mr Moten fatally wounded the forlorn father.
- Tulsa, Oklahoma - Meet Jesse Thornhill. The Tulsa man was arrested early today after he allegedly tried to run down his landlord with a car. Following his arrest for assault with a dangerous weapon, Thornhill, 28, was booked into the Tulsa County jail, where the below booking photo was snapped. Yes, Thornhill has horns.
- TMZ: Sources connected with Mel Gibson tell TMZ they have "hard proof" Oksana Grigorieva tried to extort Gibson, demanding more than $10 million from the actor in return for keeping the secret tapes just that -- secret.
- Mel Gibson's soon-to-be ex-wife, Robyn, has written a sworn declaration on behalf of Mel, saying he has never physically abused her or any of their children in the 28 years they were married ... TMZ has learned.
- The Michigan couple accused of trying to extort $680,000 from John Stamos -- claiming they had photos of the actor with strippers and cocaine -- was found guilty today ... and now face 5 years in prison. 24-year-old Allison Coss and 31-year-old Scott Sippola were convicted of conspiracy -- as well as threatening Stamos' reputation via email. Stamos sounded alarms back in December that he was the victim of an extortion attempt -- prompting an FBI sting operation that resulted in the couple's arrest at a Michigan airport. FBI agents testified that they never found any photos of Stamos getting down and dirty with strippers -- and Stamos' attorney claims they don't exist.
