Update from KRMG's Rick Couri

By Joe Kelley, Host of the KRMG Morning News

I received the following email from Rick Couri Monday night at 7:30pm:

Spent a lot of time in doctors offices today and learned a lot. They think this is a radiation induced meningioma. It's a skull based tumor that starts in the lining of the brain and then pushed into the brain. Trouble is, this one is pushing a lot on her optic nerve and damaging her left eye.

The worst news of the day is that she may not recover vision in that eye. As of now, things are very blurry and getting worse so we can't wait much longer. The surgeon we saw today is not a specialist in these tumors so he has handed us off to someone who is. We hope to hear from him tonight (Monday) or Tuesday. They are also worried about a possible blood clot in her leg and her blood sugar. Both will be tested in the next day and she is scheduled for an eye test to see where we are with her vision as of now.

We very much hope for surgery on Wednesday but this was a rush appointment and we are at the mercy of the schedule of the surgeons. They have all been super but there we still need a few hours free in one of the schedules in order to get in.

The other not so good news is that these radiation induced tumors tend to be more aggressive so we need to see if it is and if so, how we treat it after surgery. The docs don't think they can get it all, it's in too dangerous of a place.

I know that's a lot of writing but that's where we are today. I'll update you again tomorrow and her caring bridge page will be updated in a few minutes.
