Syria's Assad Marks Prophet's Birthday
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sits in prayer. On Thursday, Syrian state television aired footage of the president worshipping at a Damascus mosque, marking Prophet Mohammed's day of birth on the Islamic calendar. After, Assad was seen shaking hands with dozens of supporters. This is the first time Assad has made an appearance on national television since January 6. Syria remains mired in civil war that has killed 60,000 as the conflict's beginning nears its second anniversary.
