Qwentyn Hunter was in the pool with his ten year old brother when the incident occurred.
One passenger sitting near the pool told TV stations in Miami what happened.
“I was by the pool and I heard the DJ say there was a kid in the water, get the kid out of the water, she began.”Then I saw a man jump in and get him.”
She continued “they were doing chest compressions, it was just, I’m sorry.”
Passengers nearby quickly began CPR but the six year old was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The death happened onboard the Carnival Victory on the final leg of a four day trip to the Caribbean when the accident happened.
Police from Miami-Dade County met the ship when it docked and began an immediate investigation before concluding the drowning was an accident and no foul play was involved.
It’s been a rough couple of years for Carnival starting with the Triumph being disabled at sea by a fire. That was followed by the Carnival Dream being stopped in St. Maarten by technical issues and Carnival owns the Costa Concordia as well. The Concordia ran aground off Italy last year killing 32 passengers.
