Ever heard of the “big whack?”
No, it’s not what happened when the science teacher caught you putting dissected frog hearts in girls backpacks (although I do know ONE person that happened to.)
The big whack is thought to have been the collision between earth and another large body some 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists think the moon was formed from the chunk of Earth that came from the collision.
If true, that would mean the moon is more like a baby earth and the water came from part of our planet.
It was originally believed any water would have been vaporized and lost in the collision but the LA Times reports the scientists now have a different idea.
They think the impact could have created a barrier of super heated gas that actually protected the moisture.
In Time magazine one researcher said "I’m inclined to think that the measurements, and the primary interpretation, make sense, this is a piece of the puzzle rather than a solution to the puzzle."
