She's been called Smelly Ellie, and for years she didn't know why.
It started when she was 30 years old, when suddenly she started to smell like rotten eggs as well as a fishy smell.
James says, "At first I didn’t understand what was wrong. I’d always had impeccable hygiene."
Total strangers would hold their noses around her in public, and co-workers showered her with gifts of soaps and perfumes to deal with the stench.
While James knew the gifts were well intended, she didn't take it that way.
"I would come home from work every night and cry. It was completely humiliating." James said
Only after seven years of doctors appointments and research, did the answer finally show up.
She found out she suffered from fish-odor syndrome, technically known as Trimethylaminuria (TMAU).
Her body is unable to cope with certain foods – meat, dairy, coffee and fish – and releases trimethylamine, which creates the smelly odor.
By following a special diet, and working with a specialist, her condition is under control.
And to show that Love does conquer all, Ellie now has a boyfriend named Dan Molston who thinks she's great, just the way she is.
Currently, there is no cure for the syndrome.
