The scuffle began when a soldier named Brittany Bell became upset at a restaurant.
She was approached by off duty deputy and retired Marine Paul Derrick but Bell tried to brush him off.
Derrick went to his truck and brought back his badge, gun, and handcuffs and began to arrest Bell.
Another soldier at the restaurant began taking cell phone video, it shows Derrick yelling at management when they approached and tried to help.
At one point Derrick is told that Bell is a soldier and you can hear him on the video say “this is how Marines deal with soldiers,” then he slams Bell into a table.
Police in Columbia, South Carolina showed up and were in the process of arresting Bell but when they were shown the cell phone video shot by Steven Hughes, the situation was quickly reversed.
Hughes told WIS-TV “he watched maybe the first 30 seconds of it. And when he heard the Marine-Army comment he said, ‘Alright, things just changed. Arrest him, 10-37, and release her.”
Hughes told the officers “‘Sir, I know it’s hard, but that’s the right thing.”
Police reports say both Bell and Derrick had been drinking before the incident occurred.
