Though federal officials warned of long lines at airport security checkpoints because of mandatory budget cuts, travelers at Tulsa International Airport breezed through without having to wait Friday morning.

The only lines of any length were at the airlines check-in counters, but even those were fairly moderate despite slightly higher than normal traffic.

Alexis Higgins of the Tulsa Airport Authority told KRMG that while it is one of the busiest weekends of the year because of spring break, most airlines as well as the Transportation Safety Administration brought people in early to handle the extra traffic.

The main issue for the next few days would affect last-minute travelers, Higgins said.

"The airlines have told us that all of their flights are full at least through Tuesday," she said, "so it's gonna be really hard if you haven't purchased a ticket yet to come to the airport and get a ticket and fly out before Tuesday."

Fliers who prefer to avoid lines can try to book their flights around the busiest times of day, she added.

"Twenty to twenty-five percent of our traffic departs before 8 a.m., and then we have another wave that leaves around 10:30 or 11:00, and then around 4:00, 4:30 in the afternoon."

Travelers need to remember that the relaxed security restrictions that allow items such as small knives and athletic equipment do not go into effect until late April, so leave them at home.
