TULSA —
Wagoner County Sheriff Bob Colbert made some headlines this week saying he'll refuse to enforce any executive orders issued by the president banning certain types of weapons or mandating a limit on ammunition magazines.
When contacted by KRMG, Colbert stood by that statement but also added that he would comply with such laws if they were passed by the legislative branch.
"If they pass a law, then obviously we'll comply with the law," he told KRMG.
He says his statements were a reaction to a number of phone calls from concerned constituents.
And, he added, the problem isn't guns, or ammunition clips, and that tragedies like the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre will happen no matter what.
"If that's gonna happen, that's gonna happen anyway, or they're gonna drive through the building with a vehicle, or they're gonna throw a Molotov cocktail or something like that. It's not the gun, it's the people."
He favors closing any loopholes in background checks, and finding a way for authorities to follow up and confirm the information provided by prospective gun owners.
