MUSKOGEE, Okla. —
Muskogee businessman and political newcomer Markwayne Mullin declared victory late Tuesday night in the hotly-contested and nationally significant 2nd Congressional District race in Oklahoma.
Longtime D.A. and Asst. U.S. Attorney Rob Wallace has conceded the race.
What was expected by many observers to be a very tight race turned into a blowout early, with Mullin racing to an early lead of 56 percent to 40 percent, with Independent candidate Michael Fulks bringing up the rear with four percent.
That figure held consistently throughout the evening.
By about 8:30 p.m. Wallace called Mullin to congratulate him on his victory.
Speaking with KRMG just moments after his victory speech, Mullin was asked what "Job One" would be when he reached Washington, D.C.
"Well the first thing we want to do is get this government under control. Government's got too big, with Obamacare, with our regulations, the mandates on us... If we can shrink this government, we can bring this economy back and business owners, small businesses, (are) the backbone of this country."
Asked if he had any thought for Wallace, Mullin told us, "He ran the race he had to run. I think he handled himself real well."
He mentioned Wallace's phone call of concession.
"He was very gracious, wished me the best luck and said he looked forward to working with me."
Mullin has told KRMG his plan is to go to Washington, D.C. and work to repeal "Obamacare" and help institute a new atmosphere of fiscal responsibility, then return to his home and business in Muskogee.
Asked Tuesday night if that was still the plan, he answered that it absolutely was.
His plan is to serve three terms, a total of six years, then retire from politics.
KRMG spoke with Mullin's Democratic opponent Rob Wallace after Wallace's concession speech to supporters.
He says he will continue to fight for Oklahomans.
He also encourages everyone to pray for Mullin as he takes office.
