Tulsans help Colorado wildfire victims

Rick Ulmstead
American Red Cross Volunteer

By April Hill

Eleven volunteers and three emergency vehicles from Tulsa are now in Colorado to help wildfire victims.

Homes near Colorado Springs are burned to the ground and vehicles are nothing more than charred metal sitting in driveways.

Right now the workers are going from home to home, or what’s left of the burned down homes.

Home owners who fled huge wildfires are now allowed to return to their neighborhoods as firefighters continue battling the 26-square-mile blaze.

Rick Ulmstead, a volunteer with the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross, says, “We have been given clearance to go in. The families will be there. So, we obviously will be distributing water and cleanup kits to help the families.”

The crew will help the fire victims sift through the charred remains.

Ulmstead tells KRMG, “I believe that they’re also going to be sending out some mental health workers to help with the stress the families are going through as they return for the first time.”

The American Red Cross team left Sunday and will be in Colorado Springs for two weeks.

If you would like to donate, call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS.
