TULSA, Okla. —
Two little jaguar cubs made their "official" debut at the Tulsa Zoo Friday morning.
The unnamed male cubs have very different personalities, says Abby Carroll, a Large Mammal Zookeeper who helps care for the big cats.
One is quite assertive and the first to approach humans or check out anything new or interesting, while the other hangs back and takes much longer to warm up to an unfamiliar situation.
The mother and her cubs are kept separate from the father, a situation which mirrors jaguar behavior in the wild.
The public will have a chance to help name the two cubs, says zoo spokesperson Sarah Floyd.
The zoo's website will offer people a chance to vote for one of several Mayan names for the young predators.
There are fewer than 50 jaguars at accredited zoos.
The birth of two potential breeding males is a major coup for the Tulsa zoo.
The young cats will probably spend their first year or two at the zoo, then be sent off to another location to mate.
