TULSA'S ELECTION HQ: Tulsa voters say 'yes' to city charter fix

TULSA —

Tulsa voters overwhelmingly approved a fix to the city charter that corrects a mistake from a ballot initiative which passed in November of last year.

At the time, voters approved several changes to the city charter regarding city elections, approving nonpartisan races and changing the elections to even-numbered years.

The new rules would also call for the city primary to be held in September, but didn't change the filing date for candidacy, which is in July.

The problem is that state law prohibits elections in September and October of even-numbered years.

State and federal election laws also require a period of at least 35 days between elections. They also mandate that ballots be sent to members of the armed forces stationed overseas 45 days in advance of the election.

Finally, the county election board requires 75 days notice in advance of an election.

The measure passed Tuesday removes the word "September" from the wording of the charter, and moves the filing date up to April.

Voters passed it by a margin of 86 percent to 14 percent.
