Tulsa Senator vows to re-introduce foreign law bill

A bill prohibiting the use of foreign law in state courts didn't quite make it through the Oklahoma legislature.

The Senate passed Senate Bill 671, but the legislation wasn't heard in the House.

Tulsa Senator Dan Newberry is the bill’s author.

"I wouldn't say I'm not disappointed. I certainly would have liked to have seen it go into effect this year. But it is what it is. We just have to pull our boots up and go on to the next journey, and the next part of the journey is next year," Newberry said.

Newberry tells KRMG he believes they’ll have an easier time passing the bill when he re-introduces next February.

The legislation was similar to a voter-approved Sharia Law ban that was blocked by a federal judge after a Muslim community leader alleged it discriminated against his religion.

Newberry says his legislation addressed that issue.

"This bill says that no international law or religious law can be used when deciding a court case in the state of Oklahoma.  So it doesn't limit it to just Sharia Law.”

Newberry says state laws reflect the values and ideals of its people and the bill he authored ensures state law will not be compromised by a judge who is influenced by foreign law.
