(Tulsa, OK) – Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett is preparing to issue another veto.  The mayor says he’ll reject a City Council proposal to put a form of government charter change on the ballot.

The proposed change would replace the current Mayor/Council form of government to a Council/City Manager form.

Mayor Bartlett says the change is not needed.  He says the frustration that the public feels with the friction he’s had with the Council is not a reason to switch how we do business.  Bartlett is quick to add that he knows the frustration isn’t just with city councilors but also includes him.

One reason given for the veto is the mayor says there has been no real groundswell from the public for a change.  When asked why not go ahead and let the public say so in November Mayor Bartlett cites the cost of elections.  “Elections are expensive.  This is not one that was brought up by a large number of people.”

Mayor Bartlett also rejects the argument that changing to a city manager type of government would help the city by keeping continuity within City Hall.  “The continuity I see is a total lack of a check and balance.  Right now there’s a pretty good check and balance between the administration and the City Council.”

The proposal hasn’t made it to the mayor’s desk just yet but he says he will veto it once he gets it.  Mayor Bartlett also expects to have enough support on the City Council to prevent an override.
