Tulsa library closed due to bedbug infestation
A sign at the Tulsa Central Library informs patrons of its closure, July 17, 2012

TULSA —

The Tulsa Central Library downtown closed Tuesday afternoon until further notice due to an infestation of bedbugs.

Gary Shaffer, CEO of the Tulsa City-County Library, says a patron noticed the bugs on a chair on the 3rd floor approximately noon.

He says he believes the man was actually bitten.

"He correctly identified them (the insects) as bedbugs," Shaffer told KRMG at the scene.

The decision was immediately made to evacuate all customers and non-essential personnel from the library.

An exterminator was called in to assess the situation and search for further evidence of infestation.

Shaffer said the library also plans to deploy a second line of defense as a precaution.

Wednesday, "Liberty Belle," a Oklahoma's only bedbug-sniffing dog, will be brought to the library to employ her unique skill.

Shaffer tells KRMG it's unclear when the library will be able to reopen, but he hopes it will be back in business by Wednesday afternoon.
