Tulsa, Okla. —

Tulsa fire crews are gearing up for another season of furnace fires.

Bradstone Apartment employee told KRMG a furnace is the suspected cause of a Tuesday evening fire.  EMSA said it happened near S. Peoria and E. 11th St and six people were transported to the hospital.

Air Solution's Darrell Hilligoss said there are multiple reasons for furnaces catching fire.

"You could have vent pipes off," Hilligoss said. "Your burners could get dirty and not actually light."

There is a simple solution.

"You really need to have a licensed person go through and check it just for safety sake," Hilligoss said.

A homeowner should have their furnace checked once a year.  Hilligoss said the best time is right before you turn it on for the first time.

Also, newer furnaces are less likely to catch fire.

"They've built in a lot of safeties for flame roll-out," Hilligoss said.  "They're just a lot safer."
