TULSA, Okla. —

In the weeks and months ahead, thousands of cars damaged by then-Hurricane Sandy will literally be flooding the market.

Brian Cox, owner of Cecil and Son's in Sand Springs, says many will be taken out of state in an attempt to hide a 'flood' or 'salvage title' in a process known as 'title washing.'

Cox recommends getting a used car inspected by a reputable mechanic before buying it, even if there are no signs of flood damage.

Cox also suggests looking for water droplets inside the instrument cluster or rust in the seatbelt buckles.

Another recommendation is to check the vehicle's CarFax or similar report to see where the vehicle was last registered.

Cox says, "That's one way they can't hide it really. They can see the last couple of places registered and if it was one of those places (hit by Sandy), I would run."

Cox suggests pulling up the carpet and looking for mold.

Cox explains that mold takes some time to show up.
