State questions aplenty fill ballots all across the nation

Oklahoma not the only state that features many

By Steve Berg and Alison Burns

Tulsa, Okla. —

Some of the most fiercely debated issues of our time will be on ballots across the country next month.

Supporters of legalizing gay marriage and marijuana are looking for historic victories in several states next month.

There are more initiatives and referendums than usual on the ballot all across the U.S. in dozens of states.

In Oklahoma for example, the referendum to ban affirmative action is getting nationwide attention.

Voters in other states are considering issues like in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, assisted suicide and public funding of religious schools.

Money is pouring in to states to influence the outcomes, but Justine Sarver who heads a group that lobbies for ballot initiatives says the presidential race could have the biggest impact.

“In presidential election years, voters go to the polls to vote for their choice for president,” said Justine Sarver, ballot initiative strategy center.

Supporters of the Vision 2 plan in Tulsa, for example, have also alluded to the fact that turnout is high in presidential elections and will be a good way to get a true sampling of how people feel about that project, which will also be decided on November 6th.
