Tulsa, Okla. —
In the wake of the terrible and tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin is urging school disticts in Oklahoma to take advantage of the free security training available at the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security.
Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security Director Kim Edd Carter says, "Even though the schools were already out for the holidays, we received several emails from their schools wanting to participate and I'm sure that when they come back from the holidays we'll get even more."
Carter says school leaders knew about the risks before, but the shooting in Newtown was a reminder.
"Wether you are in a small school or a large school or a small school you can have serious events at your school."
He says interest in the program was high even before the Connecticut shooting.
"We've already had over 150 schools that participated and over 400 attendees. That'd be a combination of principals, superintendents, and police officers from the jurisdictions of those cities."
Hear Kim Edd Carter talk more about the statewide program.
Right now, the six schools have scheduled the seminars.
Carter says, "I'm sure, because of the demand for them, we're going to have to add even more classes, which we will proudly do."
He said schools will benefit from the training even if they already have security procedures.
"Even if they have plans in place, we're asking them maybe to attend our training to look at it with a little bit different set of eyes, to go back and do a survey, and then try to identify the gaps and fix those gaps with their security that they might find."
To sign-up, school officials should contact the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security at (405) 425-7296 or through the agency’s Web site at www.ok.gov/homeland.
