Some Tulsa kids aspire to Olympic swimming glory

Even as USA Olympic swimmer Micheal Phelps was preparing to officially become the most highly-decorated Olympian in history, several young Tulsans were working on their swimming strokes, and dreaming of following in his soggy footprints one day.

KRMG visited the Miller Swim School at 6415 S. Mingo Ave. and spoke with Gina Miller Kinnison, the owner, and some of her young students.

The kids had no problem rattling off their favorite swimming stars -- Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin.

But when asked if they aspired to Olympic glory themselves, they became more thoughtful, and the responses from the group of pre-teens varied widely.

One young woman said she considered herself "not a very athletic person," and she had no interest in pursuing swimming at that level.

One of her fellow swimmers with the Miller team said he just might give it a shot.

"I've seriously considered trying in a few years to get there. I'm really far away now, but I think I could," he said.

As for Gina, whose parents built the Miller Swim School in 1960, she admitted to having some regrets about not pursuing her own Olympic dreams.

"I just wish I could rewind time and do it again," she told KRMG.

"I am a very competitive person and I feel like if I could go back and see now what I could have done, I think I have the drive in me, that I could have done that."

She says Olympic-level swimmers put in a minimum of four hours a day in the pool, six to seven days a week.
