Same-sex marriage banned in OK prisons until Supreme Court ruling

The Department of Corrections has put a stop to all marriages within Oklahoma prisons until the United States Supreme Court decides on whether states can set their own marriage definitions later this month.

"If same-sex marriages are ruled legal, then the policy will need to be changed," Oklahoma Department of Corrections Department's spokeswoman Terri Watkins said.

Oklahomans for Equality joined the plaintiffs and lawyers for the Oklahoma marriage equality lawsuit, condemning the DOC's decision.

Lead plaintiffs in the Oklahoma marriage equality lawsuit, Mary and Sharon Bishop-Baldwin, said the DOC is going against the U.S. Constitution and the federal appeals court by halting all prisoner marriages.

Oklahoma courts ruled that same-sex couples can marry in October 2014.

The Supreme Court ruled that prison inmates have a constitutional right to marry in 1987.
